Ode to Joy by NUS Symphony Orchestra & The NUSChoir

NUS Arts Festival 2018 climaxes with an uplifting performance of what is considered one of the most remarkable demonstrations of human achievement. Despite struggling with hearing loss, health issues and social isolation, Beethoven drew inspiration from the ode by German poet Schiller to create Ninth Symphony Ode To Joy, a triumphant anthem for the deepest yearning for freedom, unity and hope for humankind that has since been played to mark significant historical moments in our time.

Under the baton of Maestro Lim Soon Lee, NUS Symphony Orchestra and The NUSChoir, two outstanding youth music groups in Singapore who have received awards in international festivals and competitions, join forces with soloists Ee-Ping Yee, Jade Tan Shi Yu , Jonathan Tay and Valentin Lazrein in this musical milestone in celebration of CFA’s 25th Anniversary.

When what shouldn’t happen in a classical music concert happens...

Altenberg Lieder | Alban Berg
(played into the surreal, out of the keyboard)

Chansons de Bilitis | Claude Debussy
(performed with a theatrical twist)

Wesendonck Lieder | Richard Wagner

(With atypical youth and sprightliness)

…Can you take the heat?

Presenting an edgy classical music experience at Zouk, Singapore’s dance mecca, are two of Singapore’s most exciting young musicians Jade Tan Shi Yu (Mezzo-Soprano, www.jadetanshiyu.com) and Churen Li (Piano, www.lichuren.com). Enjoy a cocktail mix of classic and offbeat performative elements with a straight shot of experimentalism, as we question the traditions of classical music performances.

P.S. Due to venue restrictions, this event is exclusively for above-18's. The price of the ticket includes entrance to Zouk Capital and concert-goers are warmly invited to stay on after the concert!

Voyage Festival: Alumni Panel Discussion - Life after YST

What lies ahead? An inevitable question that all music students come to confront. To
pursue a further education or to dive into one’s professional career? European school,
or the United States? Perhaps some anxieties echo a more sinister undertone– is
music really for me? Tapping onto the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory’s rich network of
Alumni relations, we trace the pathways of those before us to understand how they
grappled with similar growing pains and emerged through struggle with renewed
passion for their craft. Audience members are warmly invited to submit any questions
they might have about post-graduation prospects.

Du Rui, Assistant Concert Master, Minnesota Orchestra
Low Jia Hua, General Manager, Metropolitan Festival Orchestra
